  4.         James Burke, PBS-TV host of CONNECTIONS and author of THE DAY THE
  5.         UNIVERSE CHANGED, describes the hypertext paradigm as:

  7.             "more important to society than the invention of the
  8.              printing press or the alphabet."

  10. Why?    Burke sees hypertext as democratizing information, meaning that hyper-
  11. ====    text removes the traditional barriers to knowledge such as -- language,
  12.         understanding, education, professions, institutions.  He believes
  13.         hypertext may produce major societal changes because knowledge can
  14.         be acquired simply by tapping a keyboard.  <link04>

  16. Change  Hypertext may eliminate intermediaries between you and the
  17.         knowledge you desire.  In the future, hypertext may also create jobs
  18.         and information monopolies for those who know how to organize
  19.         knowledge into hypertext systems.

  22. ======  monopolistic wealth in water-based economies.  In the near future, the
